Note:  change watershed information - create separate page for Toronto-GTA Watershed ?? include link to Watershed Wall

Need stories - what was the thinking behind this piece, materials used, how long did it take to construct it, stories behind the scenes.

Don Valley Watershed

  • Toronto has five watersheds each featuring recreational nature trails, woodland, meadow and wetland habitats
  • a living water wall depicting the ravine system and Greenbelt rivers that flow through Toronto.
  • Toronto’s 26,000-acre ravine system – the largest ravine system of any city in the world – carries the tributaries of the city’s urban watersheds, created by the meltwater of the receding glaciers over 10,000 years ago.
  • the Don River is 273 km (360 km² basin) long and passes through 6 municipalities
  • The main trunk of the Humber River is 126 km (903 km² basin) long and passes through 10 municipalities
  • The Rouge River is 250 km long (336 km² basin) and passes through 7 municipalities
  • There are over 200 “lost rivers” (buried under our streets) in Toronto
  • The Greenbelt is a 1.8 million-acre area in Ontario in which environmentally-important green spaces, wetlands, farmland, and communities are protected.
  • Over 100 municipalities within the Greenbelt share an important land use planning trust, and are committed by law to defending a large continuous green space.
  • It has been estimated that the Greenbelt contributes $2.6 billion annually to the ecological services of the region.
  • Much of the Oak Ridges Moraine lies in the Greenbelt. It contains the largest concentration of headwater streams in the Greater Toronto Area.
  • The Moraine acts as a recharge area for groundwater and is the source of Toronto’s drinking water

Watershed Consciousness Wall

  • Our resident artist Ferrucio Sardella made this piece representing Toronto’s watershed
  • pipes represent waterways --  Up in the north are the various sources of water and you can see Toronto’s three main rivers:  Humber, Don, Rouge
  • Recycled steel
  • Some of the plant material needs to be replaced, and rainwater will be carried through the pipes & water the plants
    • Ask the group if they have any idea what the  lightly etched lines are
      • They are the tributaries & streams that have been diverted or covered over during the process of building the city
    •  Mud Creek, which runs through our site, is one of those tributaries of the Don
    • It has been liberated where it comes out of the storm drains and into the ponds in the quarry
