Parking Lots

Page history last edited by Mireille 12 years, 7 months ago

  1. Landfill & Water Table
  2. Parking lot Lighting
  3. Concreate Parking Lots (2 kinds of concrete)
    • Central Parking Lot
    • Eastern Parking Lot

1.   Landfill & Water Table

  • During the period the factory operated, buildings were continually being built, added on, torn down and replaced (ML & UA)
  • The debris wasn’t removed
  • So the whole site has about  4 feet of landfill from various generations of the industrial buildings that were built/ altered/ demolished/ newly built.
  • Under that is the water table.
  • Also,  in some areas there are artefacts that needed to be preserved (UA)
  • After 100 years of industrial use, a large part of the site is a brownfield  ( alot of heavy metal )

PARKING LOT LIGHTING

  • Low energy LED fixtures reducing energy use by 85%
  • equipped with cu-offs and reflectors
  • no light is directed upward or across the proprty line
  • helps to keep the sky naturally dark for birds, bats and other living things

Central Parking Lot

The central parking lot is made of concrete, and incorporates stormwater management drainage trenches, planters for trees and wildflowers, as well as LED lighting.

  • Concrete was chosen for several reasons, including:
    • protection of archaeological resources, namely the remnants of old kiln buildings buried below the surface
    • containment of contaminated subsurface soils and groundwater
    • minimizing the "heat island" effect by reflecting away as much of the sun's energy as possible

East Parking Lot A Pervious Surface

  • The east parking lot is built with pervious concrete
  • allows water to soak into the ground
  • reducing stormwater run-off into the Don River

West Parking Lot

The west parking lot will be repaved with new asphalt for the time being, similar to what currently exists.
