MOVE: The Transportation Expo

Theme 1 - Summer 2012 - Transportation

Transportation is the great connector.

  • It links our neighbourhoods with each other and to others around the world; it moves goods and materials, and makes our economy hum.
  • But our current transportation system is polluting the air, affecting our health and making our cities less livable. And with over half the world’s 7 billion people now living in urban areas, outdated infrastructure is not keeping up, costing us billions of dollars in time lost due to clogged highways and poorly designed public transit.
  • To accommodate the economic, demographic and environmental demands of the 21st century, we must create a sustainable transportation system that addresses five overlapping issues of critical importance for the future

    • Energy,
    • Land Use,
    • Infrastructure,
    • Health and
    • Environment.

MOVE is About

  • multi-sensory tour of the past, present and future of transportation;
  • an exploration of the innovative ideas and technologies needed to build and connect our communities in efficient and sustainable ways.
  •  Drawing inspiration from international case studies and best practices, the teams will explore issues such as energy, environment, health, land use and infrastructure as they relate to a sustainable transportation future

  • Founded in 2003,
  • the Institute without Boundaries (IwB) is a Toronto-based studio that works towards collaborative design action and seeks to achieve social, ecological and economic innovation.
  •  We imagine how to live, learn, work, and play together as a global community and seek alternative development patterns and a viable path to a bright future.
  •  We are a place where students, teachers, industry and community experts can come together not only as creators and designers, but as ambassadors of hope.

Summer 2012

Infrastructure

Transportation

How can we transform city infrastructure to accommodate sustainable transportation?

  • We all experience traffic congestion on a daily basis. And a certain amount of congestion is a good thing—it means that our city is thriving. But excess congestion causes delays and those delays are economically costly.
  • Reinventing urban transportation demands an upgrade to the roads, transit stations and communication systems that sustain it.
  • Smart, efficient infrastructure will not only encourage environmental sustainability, it will also improve quality of life and support the economy as a whole. An investment in transportation infrastructure today could save billions of dollars of lost productivity in the future

  • Transportation Challenges begin with a questions
    • Shared Spaces:  How can we ease congestion and provide effective transportation in dense city centres?
    • Gigaregion:  How can we move people and products in the populated regions of the future?

Energy

How can we create a green-powered transportation system that will propel us into the future?

  • By 2050, transportation will become Canada’s highest energy-consuming sector. Despite the negative effects—increased air pollution and carbon emissions, rising energy costs and the imminent threat of peak oil—we continue to rely on fossil fuels for both energy production and transportation, and have only begun to develop viable alternatives.
  • We need to reconsider not only what modes of transportation we use, but also what kinds of energy and infrastructure will fuel them.

  • Energy Challenges
    • Beyond the Car:  How can we revolutionize the auto industry?
    • Energyway:  Could our vast network of highways and roadways be used to generate renewable energy ?
